Biography

Widnes halfback played in the 1981-82 and 1984 Wembley Cup finals with the club. Gregory made his Test debut against France in 1981 and made three tours of Australia (1984, 1988 & 1992) with the Lions. With his James Cagney-style toughness and astute ball play, Gregory was named England's Player of the Year in 1987. The mastermind of Great Britain's 26-12 win in the Third Test of the 1988 Ashes series, his half-season with I’warra in 1989 was controversial - he threatened to return home because of accommodation problems, played his heart out in the club's narrow loss to Brisbane in the Panasonic Cup final and was then dropped to the reserve bench for missing training. Having left Warrington for Wigan on a £130,000 contract, he again came to the fore in Great Britain's brilliant win over Australia in the First Test of the 1990 Ashes series. Gregory found himself out of favour with selectors on the 1992 Lions tour and was dropped after the First Test loss.
