Biography

Firebrand Cronulla second-row forward, as tough as he was talented, toured with the 1978 Kangaroos. Kneen was a local junior, spending two seasons with Helensburg in the I’warra competition before moving back to establish his career with the Sharks. He played in the 1978 grand final draw and replay against Manly in the second row but after being selected on the Kangaroo Tour made just 6 appearances in England and France. Kneen fell foul of the NSWRL Judiciary in the early 1980s during Jim Comans' campaign to clean up the game and received a twelve-month suspension that effectively ended his career. He attempted a comeback with I’warra in 1986 but suffered a hamstring injury during a trial game and retired.

Steve Kneen was an exceptionally rugged second rower. He played hard and retired before his time (due to significant infringements). Unfortunately his on field aggression prevented the league (defence and ball-playing prowess) possessed to be fully realised (should his longevity in the game allowed). Well done Steve, you left a mark in league history.
