Biography
Former Newtown RU second-row forward (4 Tests), known for his great physique, led the second wave of defections from the amateur ranks in 1909. A member of the Wallabies squad that won the gold medal at the 1908 Olympics, McCue negotiated with 14 of his team-mates to take part in promotional matches against the Pioneer Kangaroos on their return from England. Promptly banned for life by the Metropolitan Rugby Union, McCue joined six rugby ‘rebels’ at Newtown rugby league club. Not surprisingly, the Blue Bags led the competition and won the 1910 final on count back after drawing the final against Souths, 4-all. After securing Newtown's first premiership title, McCue represented NSW in 1911 and was named vice-captain of the 'Australasian' Kangaroos. Described as ‘the fastest forward playing the game,’ he played in 22 matches on tour including all three Tests against England. McCue led NSW on tours to NZ in 1912-13 and his last Test appearance was against England in 1914. He was later assistant coach at University during the club’s first season in the NSWRL (1920).

His wife was a distant relative of mine. I have a portrait of him in his Australia jersey (and cap).
