Your Say

Charlie Gill is not mentioned much now. Years ago, at the SCG Members' Bar I had a few drinks with Ferris Ashton, a team mate of Gill's in the 1952/3 Kangaroos. I recall Ashton saying that Gill was a terrific forward.

Charlie rose through the Juniors at the Northern Suburbs (Newcastle) Bluebags then on to represent Newcastle,NSW and finally representing Australia.Fondly remembered.

Charlie Gill was my coach in the Newcastle 2nd division in the early 1960s. Charlie even played a few games with the team.
During that time our team was known as Lambton United.
From memory I think Charlie was about forty three years of age.
Even at that age he was far away the best foreward in the team.
Lambton United players were considered not quite up to reserve grade standard ,and some like myself were shift workers that could not get to training on a regular basis.

Charlie was a product of the Northern Suburbs club in Newcastle. He was named in the Northern Suburbs (Newcastle) top 17 players of all time.

Charlie Gill coached our team the Under 14 League side, "Shortland Black Devils" in about 1965. I remember him being a big tough man with formidable eyebrows. He was a terrific coach for us young boys, someone you looked up to. He always praised effort no matter if you won or lost the game.
