Solid halfback, a former Great Britain Test captain (Third Test of the1963 Ashes series), missed selection on the 1966 Lions Tour and was compensated by his club with a release to spend part of the 1967 season with Norths.

    Tommy Smales excellent half back him and Johnny Rae the Cumbrian loose forward had a good partnership at the base of the scrum at Bradford in the Sixties setting up some great tries
