Monie said that you needed the best four props to win the league then. I think that Ian was well in that category. I thought that the lad was technically flawless: a great tackler and a really powerful runner. I n a team of great forwards he was by no means out of place. A great Wigan player.

He was a super prop, whose career was ended unfairly and far too soon. Also, his antique dealing skills are still vastly underrated. I bet The Chief couldn’t reliably confirm the provenance of a 17th century cherry wood armoire the way Lucas could.
