Ackland hailing from Auckland was one of NZRL's all-time best forwards (Team of the Century). Has stints in country NSW at the end of his career and coached the NZ Kiwi team in 1977.

I was playing for City Newton when Ron and his brother Jim transferred from Mt.Albert Rugby League Club. I have been a life long League Tragic and in my humble opinion,Ron Ackland is our Greatest 2nd row forward up to and including the present day. RIP Ron.

Ron was my partner and my friend and we had 20 years together. His death was sudden and we miss him dearly. A great footballer, who gave his very best to his teams and his country. Ron was loved by all he played with and coached here in NZ as well as Goulburn and Inverell in Australia. Even after two years I still miss him. xxx Rest in Peace, Ron.

I had heard plenty about this Legend of the game before I met him in 1991. Ron and I both drove coop taxis. He was a very down to earth honest no bullshit type of Bloke . You could tell he would not be the type of Bloke that would tolerate any crap as a player or Coach. In closing he was a very modest bloke who never blew his own horn. Old school action speak far more than words Miss his company and words of wisdom
