Johnny Slade

Coaching Career

Biography

Former Norths Newcastle fullback from Stockton, a reserve for NSW in the interstate matches in 1953, also played against the American 'All Stars' that year. Slade was captain-coach of P’matta that year at the tender age of 21 (surely a record for one so young) and was then chosen in the Sydney team to take on France in 1955 ahead of Clive Churchill - stopping the great fullback's sequence of 99 consecutive rep matches.

Johnny, originally from Stockton, before becoming a Northern Suburbs (Newcastle) Junior, then was signed by Paramatta in 1953.He became the youngest ever captain/coach in Sydney in 1955,replacing strangely enough another Northern Suburbs product in Charlie Gill from the 1954 season.

Hi, I was there at Redfern Oval with my parents in 1955. Parra won 15 to 8. Johnny Slade was the youngest Captain Coach playing at that time. Donny Tosh scored the winning try in the 2nd Half suffering a fraractured collar bone. At the end of the game Churchill walked over and flattened Sl.ade with a punch. johnny Slade was picked ahead of Churchill for the next rep game. Cheers
