Biography
At age 22 Neville Smith was appointed the youngest captain-coach in the history of the St George club. Two years later, in 1941, the Dragons won their first premiership under his leadership. Smith came to the club after three seasons with Brisbane Valleys from where he represented Queensland in 1938. He went on to play for NSW in six matches during 1940-41 (captain in 1940) but did not play for Australia because of the outbreak of war. In the 1941 grand final against Easts, he was knocked unconscious in a heavy tackle but recovered to score l3pts (1t, 5g) in the 31-14 win. Smith sat out the 1942 season before returning to the club as captain-coach in 1943.
