Biography
Newtown junior, although born in Sheffield England, developed into Australia's leading hooker during the 1930s. A NSW rep against England in 1932, Folwell toured with the 1933-34 Kangaroos and played in the final two Tests as well as in 19 other matches. Newtown won the 1933 premiership while he was on tour but he continued to give great service to his club (he even made a short-lived comeback as a player in 1940, aged 36). Folwell later coached the club in 1942-44, taking Newtown to its last premiership success in the 1943 grand final, and was also an Australian Selector (1957-58) and Vice-President of the NSWRL. 'Snowy' Folwell, who married the sister of Balmain premiership-winning captain Sid Goodwin and whose grandson was future Cronulla Test captain Greg Pierce, died in 1966.
