Steve was signed by York, then in the English second division where he won player of the year and was a regular loose forward. he earned the nickname "Blankets" after a comment by a fellow Aussie that when he tackled you he was all over you like a Blanket. Bleakley was named in the local press as one of the finest all time York players. He was a member of the team that played in the final game on the historic old ground at York, Clarence Street. He played for York for 2 (might have been 3) seasons. gave his reason for returning to Aussie as wanting to run his family fruit farm.
