On the 3rd of September, 1939, the Government banned all sports gatherings until further notice due to the onset of World War. The only course of action for the New Zealand touring party was to arrange to immediately return home, however a relaxation of the sports ban meant they were able to play one more game against Dewsbury on the 9th of September. The standard league season and cup fixtures were abandoned, and replaced by county competitions for Yorkshire and Lancashire sides.
