Biography
Mobile, hard-working back rower came to C’bury from Yanco Agricultural College in 1988. Gillies was used as a reserve forward in the club's grand final campaign in 1994 but his on-field leadership marked him as a future club captain. An outspoken advocate of the club’s move to Super League in 1995, Gillies was an important part of the Bulldogs' emotional 1995 grand final win over Manly. Bulldog club captain in 1996-97, he represented NSW in the Tri-Series competition in the later year. However, the 1998 season saw him left out of new coach Steve Folkes’ semi-final campaign. He finished his career by captaining the Bulldogs’ President’s Cup team to a 26-22 win over P’matta (scoring two tries in a second half comeback) before moving to England.
