Biography
Big-hearted Souths fullback was one of the biggest goal-kickers (in every sense of the word) in the game during the 1960s. Longbottom kicked three towering long-range goals in the 12-8 loss to St George in the 1965 grand final and played in the club's win over C’bury two years later. While his role was later taken over by the great Eric Simms, 'Lummy' Longbottom remained a crowd favourite with Souths fans.

Your Say

Our family friend came up in conversation today.
Old stories told & lots of laughs had.
Still missed...

I'm his nephew, and was always and still am proud of him that to this day people still comment on his achievements as a player and person. Whenever i get introduced to anyone they always say are you related to the great Lummy of the Souths glory days? i respond i sure am with a small choke at the back of my throat every time. My son Jaime was born the year Uncle passed away and was given "Kevin" as his middle name, he also can't believe it when he's introduced to people he's asked about being related to the great Lummy, we both are proud of him and Loyal Souths supporters.

Myself and Robert Stewart (cobber) never missed a game between April 67 and end of 1971. Met " lummy" on a few occasions and he was always approachable. A true gentleman to his fans and a towering giant to 2 14yr olds. Nothing but good memories.

Great man and a great footballer, I use to see the great Souths side week in and week out (when I was a schoolboy) with the great Lummy at fullback, great memories and great times! he is sadly missed.

Lummy kicked a goal from in front of the Stand at Redfern in the mud from half way - remember old leather ball in those days!!!!

I began following Souths in 1962. Kevin was my favourite player and I closely followed his career. Many good memories at Redfern, Sydney Sports Ground and SCG.

Kevin Longbottom was a big hearted good bloke.
He was a champion full back for the mighty Rabbitohs and could kick goals from great distances.
RIP Lummy.

Lummy was my god father and he was one in a million. He was a long time mate of my dad and mum ( Carol & John Newman). I spent alot of time with Lummy growing up as we were brought up around footy and my dad played for souths and later coached along with Lummy. Redfern oval was our second home.

Growing up Kevin was one of my footy heros, my friends brother Richie Powell played front row for Souths in early to mid 60s.
I am wondering if Maurice Longbottom is related to Kev, surely he must be, with the talent he has and the football sense he's gotta be ... thanks for the great article and the memories
