A whole-hearted undersized second rower who played above his weight (akin to the equally-courageous Bunny Reilly).
A fine exponent of the field goal from close range.
I recall a 1967 photo in the newspapers of Ashley sloting over a decisive field goal whilst two or three defenders were frantically clinging to his jersey!
