Biography

Veteran hooker, the twin brother of Mal McMartin, was already a seasoned campaigner with the Eels when he joined Cronulla on a privately sponsored $10,000 contract (the first recorded player to do so). A NSW rep in 1975 John McMartin was a consistent ball-winner and a highly competitive player in the open. A chief play-maker with the Sharks he played in the 1978 drawn grand final against Manly but missed the replay through injury.

Very sad to hear of his passing recently, in terms of winning the ball in the scrum there was none better.

In regards to John McMartin’s junior football question. He played for Richmond and possibly Wenty! I know his brother Mal played for wenty. My mums sister Kathy ( Johns widow) met john when he was playing for Richmond in the Hawkesbury!

One of the most underated hookers of all time - people mention Benny, George or Max but very rarely did you hear Johnny McMartin, the fact is that he was a very good playmaker, the best hooker at winning scrums the game has ever seen and he played against the best of the best.

I remember reading the Daily Telegrath that had all the stats each week and year to date etc... and guess who was winning all the scrums year after year? Johnny.

RIP mate a legend to me.
