Biography

Dunedoo junior played RU for Easts Colts while studying at the Institute of Technology in Sydney. A pacy, athletic speedster, Johnston signed with St George in 1980 and represented NSW on eight occasions between 1984-89. His highest rep honour came with selection as a reserve back in the one-off Test against NZ in 1987. Johnston assumed the St George captaincy in 1989 but was forced to retire at the beginning of the 1990 season because of injury. After he became the club’s Chief Executive in 1996 he was named Australian Test Manager for the ANZac Test in 1999. Johnston drew criticism of his handling of the sacking Craig Gower for misbehaviour in the week before the Test but remained one of the code’s brightest administration prospects until he resigned in 1999 because of ill health.

Brian Johnston scored the first ever try in a premiership at the Sydney Football Stadium. He scored that try in the first ever match played there for St George in 1988 against Eastern Suburbs a game which St George won 24-14. He also scored the first ever try in a premiership match at EnergyAustralia Stadium. He scored that try back when the ground was called the Newcastle International Sports Centre in 1985 a game which St George lost 20-10 to Canberra.
