Biography

Randwick RU centre made a sensational Australian Test debut against England as a 20-year-old in 1963 before touring South Africa with the Wallabies. Jones switched codes to play with Balmain in the mid 1960s but, after representing NSW in 1965, chose to sit out much of the 1969 season (along with Dennis Tutty and Laurie Moraschi) in protest of the NSWRL's transfer system. Jones missed the Tigers’ grand final win over Souths that year and although he returned briefly in 1970 his playing career had all but finished.

Selected to play five eighth for NSW in 1965, Jones would have been an automatic selection for an Australian Rugby League team if there had been one selected that year and therefore become a dual international in Rugby Union and Rugby League. However, quite inexplicably, there was no international series played that year.

The following year, 1966, Jones broke his thumb playing five eight for City Firsts, which put him out of contention for the state games and the international series against the touring Great Britain side again denying him a more than probable chance of achieving dual international honors. His team mate Arthur Beetson made his debut for Australia against Great Britain in the third test that year.
