Born in sthelens 12/12/49 attended St austins school , thatto Heath . Married Theresa 1971 two children Helen & Daniel
Leaving school joined sthelens junior team ,played for Lancashire u/17 u/19 and Great Britain u/ 19
Turning professional with keighley in May 1969 playing at loose forward
Signed for Rochdale 1973 where frank Myler the then coach converted him into stand off half , in 1974 butler was selected for the Great Britain squad for the game in Grenoble against France.,later that year he was selected to tour Australia & New Zealand .
In 1975 championship holders Salford signed him , enjoying further success winning the championship in 1976 also that year Salford were runners up to sthelens in the premier ship final
1979 joining Wigan for £15.000 fee broke his leg ,restricting his season .
1981 he joined his home town club St. Helens , after injury playing on loan basis joined Leigh and Fulham in an effort to re gain fitness, returning to saints playing first team football a gain before retirement in 1984 .
He enjoyed every game he played made great friends around the world and a host of great memories
