An Australian selector rang Newcastle’s Peter Howlett the night before the 1973 Kangeroo touring party was selected and told him he was in the touring squad. Then he asked him what Sydney team he was playing for next year. Howlett replied that he was staying in Newcastle. The next day when the team was released to the media, Paul Sait and Greg Pierce were the locks and Howlett’s name was missing.
