Biography

Easts junior hit his straps after six seasons as a front row forward. Salvatori was graded in 1985 but it was not until 1991 that he was selected for NSW on the interchange bench. Following Australia's shock loss in the First Test against NZ, the young prop was selected for the final two Tests of the series. Salvatori did not disappoint with his barging runs and toured Papua New Guinea with the Australian squad at the end of the year. Unfortunately, he was injured in the first tour match and had to return home. After a great start to the 1992 season, Salvatori was suspended for using an alleged head-butt in a match against Penrith, and Easts' premiership fortunes quickly nose-dived. While he did not represent during the year he returned to his best form toward the end of the season. Salvatori’s subsequent career was plagued by a series of knee injuries and he retired after playing a season with Souths in 1996. In 1997 he coached the Italian team in the World Sevens competition and in the Mediterranean Cup competition in France in 1999.

He was a great footballer but never got enough recognition if he had a different coach (not Gould) he would have been one of the best in the world. Good to see he got his live back after all the sorrow him and his daughters went through.

Salvo was a legend of a player. Fast, strong, skillfull and a leader. Very Arthur Beetson like, and would have achieved more recognition if the Roosters weren’t in the midst of a woeful overall era when he played. Him plus Brendan Hall were the players that kept the heartbeat of the Roosters team going throughout the doldrums of the mid 80’s to the mid 90’s.

Salvo was a legend. Strong, quick, skillful, and from all reports an Artie Beetson clone, just without the best caliber players around him. Yet loyal to the Roosters. Wish he was more involved in the game and the Sydney Roosters today. Still adored by everyone who’s old enough to have supported Easts back before we become Sydney City (including 1995).
