Hone Haira - English name John James (Jack) Stanaway 1873 -1931. John was initially a rugby player starting in Aratapu, in the Northern Wairoa, then to Auckland, he was also a sprinter and hurdler for the Dominion and competed in the United States befor the 3rd Olympic Games (It is not clear if he continued onto the games) He switch to Rugby League before the 1908 Native (Maori) RL tour of Australia, along with his younger brother Alexander (Ariki Haira) Stanaway. On this tour John scored the first try against Austalia in the 20-10 defeat. After the tour he turn to RL management and refereeing, where he refereed the first match between the touring England and New Zealand RL teams. - full details and pictures are available in the book 100 years of Maori Rugby League.
