Biography

Robust winger came into C’bury’s top grade with huge boots to fill in 1984. When Warren Ryan dropped veteran clubman Chris Anderson midway through the season O’Brien repaid his coach with a series of confident displays. In the grand final victory over three-time premiers P’matta, O’Brien marked Eric Grothe and saved a certain try when he intercepted a pass close to the C’bury line. He was a member of the Bulldogs’ teams that defeated St George in the 1985 grand final, 7-6, and lost to P’matta, 4-2, in the 1986 grand final. Joining Warren Ryan at Balmain in 1989 O’Brien was on the wing in his fourth grand final match when the Tigers lost a titanic struggle against Canberra in extra time.

I played with Steve at Moorebank High School under fourteen side where Steve played lock. I am pretty sure he scored eight tries in one game and fifty two tries for the season. I can not find out if these are records in school. Steve was also a great sprinter. Representing NSW in little athletics in which he competed in 100metres. Ran around the 11 sec mark.
