Biography
Pioneer fullback, a Newcastle junior, represented Northern Districts Rugby Union in the 1903 ‘Country Week’ carnival before playing against the Great Britain Lions the following year. Shifting to Glebe Rugby Union club in 1905-06, he joined neighbours Balmain in 1907-08 before switching codes to play for the newly formed Balmain Rugby League Club in the NSWRL’s debut season. In 1909 Woolley made his Test debut against NZ in the 19-11 loss in Sydney and was not surprisingly dropped for the second match of the series in Brisbane, which was dominated by Queensland players. Woolley was reinstated for the Third Test of the series, which Australia won 25-5. This was to be his only season in representative football and he left Balmain the following year to play in the Newcastle competition.
