Mike Twist started his Rugby League career at Saints academy. He did not appear for the first team and subsequently moved to Oldham and Swindon as well as spells for Castleford as well as Prescott Panthers and Blackpool Borough. At international level, he represented Scotland students and subsequently switched allegiances and played for the Irish first team for several games.

Mike Twist started his career Rugby at St Helens academy before moving to Oldham and playing for their first team for several years. He also played on loan for rivals Swinton as well as making appearances for the now defunct Prescott Panthers. Internationally, Twist represented Scotland at student level. Scoring the winning try at a game in Carlisle against a strong Wales team. Twist subsequently switched allegiances to Ireland and gained several caps for their first team. Twist was offered a contract after retirement for Blackpool Borough, however he turned this down.
