Biography
Irish-born John Berne was actually a Souths junior, playing both SG Ball and Jersey Flegg. He was graded as an amateur in 1970 and played several third grade matches. Berne left league to play RU with Randwick and became one of the best attacking centres in the Wallaby team. Berne played in one Test, against Scotland on the 1975 British tour, before returning to Souths in 1976. While his professional career did not reach similar heights, Berne gave good service to Souths and Cronulla during his nine seasons in the code.

I understand Micheal Berne who played for Souths in 2002 is a relation to John.
