Biography

Former Penrith junior found success in the Newcastle engine-room after overcoming injuries in 1991-92. A driving force for the Knights, Butterfield was badly missed during the club's 1992 semi-final campaign but capped his career with a starring role in the Knights’ grand final win over Manly in 1997. The following year, he belatedly gained a NSW jersey before overtaking Marc Glanville as the club’s longest-serving player. Butterfield retired at the end of the 2000 season, becoming President of the Players Association.
