Steve Carter

Wiry Wyong five-eighth/halfback was a star performer for the Panthers during the 1990s. Carter's versatility though saw him relegated to the reserve bench for the 1990 finals series. The following year, he proved to be an important link at five-eighth in the champion Panther backline that won the premiership. In the same year, Carter impressed with a good performance for Country Origin and was used as a reserve for NSW in 1992. Carter took over the captaincy of the Panthers following the exit of the club’s established stars and continued to give good service for the club during the late 1990’s. However, in an effort to surpass Royce Simmons’ club record for first grade games, Carter signed for one last season despite the fact that he was suffering from chronic shoulder and sternum injuries. Carter battled poor form to set a new club record and incredibly, despite the Panthers finishing last in the premiership, signed a one-year contract with the newly-promoted English club, Widnes, in 2002.
