Biography

The son of former St George prop Robin Gourley captained the Australian RU Schoolboys on the 1986 tour of NZ before touring England, Ireland and Scotland with the Wallabies in 1988. Scott Gourley, who joined Eastwood RU club from his hometown of Narrabri, played in five RU Tests before switching codes to play for his father's former club. Gourley took time to find his feet in the new code but the lanky forward improved his work-rate and quietly developed his talent for off-loading the ball to his supports. Chosen for the tour of Papua New Guinea at the end of 1991, he made his only Test appearance as a reserve in the First Test. Gourley was easily St George's best player in the club’s 1992 grand final loss to Brisbane. Continually taking the ball up, off-loading a dream pass that resulted in Ricky Walford's try and scoring a try in the dying minutes, he was unlucky not to have gained a place in Australia's World Cup squad that year. Gourley made his State of Origin debut as a reserve in 1993 but he was relatively quiet in St George's 14-6 grand final loss to Brisbane. Subsequent seasons were injury-ridden but disappointing by his standards. Signing with Easts for two seasons, he recaptured his best form but retired at the end of the 1998 to pursue his business career.
