Biography
Newtown junior was graded as a 16-year-old in the club's third grade side in the code's pioneer season of 1908. Townsend returned to the Newtown juniors before making a comeback to grade in 1913. An imposing six-foot forward, he played for Australia in two Tests on the tour of NZ in 1919 before representing with the 1921-22 Kangaroos. A NSW rep against Queensland and England in 1920, Townsend played in the back row in Australia's Second Test win over England at Hull and in 12 other matches.

I was a kid growing up in Lord St. Newtown in the 60's, I used to talk to this old man in the street & and outside the SP joint (Dickson Ln) he never told me he was Dick Townsend NRL player, he lived in Darley St. (John)
