Biography
Another product of Christian Brothers Waverley, Lewis played in Griffith in 1931 before venturing back to Souths. The talented forward first played for NSW in 1935 and represented Australia in two Tests on the tour of NZ. A 1937-38 Kangaroo, Lewis played in seven Tests on tour; two against NZ, three against England and two on the ground-breaking tour of France. Souths coach in 1945, Lewis is credited with precipitating Souths' 'golden era' in the 1950s when he discovered a raw-boned prop playing for the Armed Services in Papua New Guinea at the end of the war. He talked the young player, Jack Rayner, into trialling with Souths after his demobilisation and the rest is history.
