Biography

Norths prop, and captain, played for NSW in 1947-48 and took his place in the Australian side when Eddie Brosnan pulled out on the eve of the Second Test against NZ in 1948. That match earned Hand a place on the 1948-49 Kangaroo Tour and the vigorous forward played in 13 matches including the Second Test against Great Britain. On his return, Hand successfully negotiated a release from Norths (which had finished last in 1948) to captain-coach Cootamundra. As a result, the ARL inserted a clause into all contracts stating that an international player must play for his club the year after returning from an overseas trip. Hand later played for Gundagai in 1953 and was also a first grade referee in the Riverina and Maher Cup competitions.

Additional Notes

Served in WWII at the age of 19, fighting in Borneo.

Nevyl was like all rugby league internationals invited to the annual reunion of players. Nevyl was also invited to the annual reunion of North Sydney players. In his older years Nevyl used to come and stay at my place at Chatswood for a week so he could go to both reunions. He would take me along to the North Sydney reunion. Nevyl was my mother's brother which means that I was Nevyl's nephew. Ron McPhail
