Biography

Newtown junior spent the 1949 season with Gunnedah before returning to the club a more mature player. The centre/pivot represented NSW against Great Britain in 1950 and made his Test debut against France as a centre in the Second Test in Brisbane the following year. In 1952, following an injury to Frank Stanmore, Geelan was called on to play five-eighth in all three Tests against NZ. Despite crossing for three tries in the Second Test, Australia lost the match 49-25 and ultimately the Trans Tasman series. Geelan earned his place on the 1952-53 Kangaroo tour and played in four Tests against Great Britain and France (as well as 16 other matches). In 1954 he captain-coached Newtown to the minor premiership but missed the grand final through injury. In 1955 he captain-coached Rockhampton before spending two seasons with C’bury in a similar role.
