Biography

Former Mackay forward first represented Queensland in 1959 while playing in Toowoomba. A bulky second row forward who later joined the champion St George club in the 1960s, Rasmussen toured with the 1959-60 Kangaroos and made his Test debut against Great Britain. After playing against France in 1960 he was lured to St George and went on to play in five successive grand final wins (1962-66, the first at lock). Rasmussen played against Great Britain in two Tests in 1962 and while he was a frequent selection for NSW between 1962-68, he had to wait another five years to play for Australia again. Selected for his second Kangaroo tour in 1967, he played in all six Tests against Great Britain and France. His final appearance for Australia was in the successful 1968 World Cup series. After St George's reign as premiership champions ended, Rasmussen returned to Queensland to captain-coach Souths Brisbane – and again played for his state some ten years after his rep career began. League fans were saddened by his premature death from a heart attack at Greenmount near Toowoomba, in 1978, aged 51.

    Elton Rasmussen was my Mother’s First Cousin.
    My Fathers Family have lived in Mackay, After arriving from Forfar in SCOTLAND in 1887.
    My Great Grandfather started the very First Sugar Mill there, which still stands Today
    IThe Sugar Capital of Australia. As I was very Young, I Never got to see him Play for either QLD, AUSTRALIA, or St George. I did meet him when he came up to Mackay, and Remember Looking up at him thinking, My God - You are Massive.
