Pound for pound the best lock forward in RL in the 1960's - even better than Johnny Raper!

Absolutely better than Johnny Raper - every time they played against each other in City v Country Panno came out on top - one of the nest!!

Without a doubt Terry Pannowitz was the most courageous player in rugby League throughout his career which lasted from 1960 to 1976 all played for Maitland. Weighing just over 11 stone (69 kg) he was a terrier in defence, a brilliant scheming organiser in attack and the most inspirational of leaders. He was made a Life Member of both his club Maitland and the Newcastle Rugby League while still playing. He played for Australia in 1965, Frequently for NSW and Combined Country versus City on twelve occasions. Easily the most admired product in the history of Country Rugby League.

TERRYS YOUNGER BROTHER MICK IS HIGHLY REGARDED AS A LEGEND IN THE CENTRAL WESTERN AREA OF QLD. MICK WAS CAPTAIN COACH OF WINTON IN 77, AND LED THEM TO BE UNDEFEATED A GRADE PREMIERS IN THAT YEAR. IT IS OFTEN SAID IN LOCAL RUGBY LEAGUE CIRCLES THAT MICK WAS THE BEST PLAYER THAT COMP HAS EVER SEEN. SOME PREVIOUS PLAYERS INCLUDE RAY HIGGS, MAT SING, LEE HUTCHENS , BOBBY MUIR, ROBERT ORCHARD, CHIPS HARRINGTON AND THE LIST GOES ON. . WITH OUT QUESTION, A TRUE CHAMPION RUGBY LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE 70,S LIKE HIS OLDER BROTHER TERRY.

I played against Johnny raper ( when he capt/ coched Kurri ) and terry pannowitz at maitland and pound for pound, pannowitz was every bit as good as the " immortal " but somewhat lighter, raper consequentially got the nod at test level due to this and because he was continually under the selectors noses. It also helps when you had other great players around you. Raper was a great player, but pannowitz was every bit as good

Pannowitz pound for pound was every bit as good as Raper. I know because I played against both in the Newcastle comp, Raper captain coached Kurri and pannowitz captain coached maitland. Both were fitness fanatics and great cover defenders. They often clashed in city / country games where Raper got selectors nod because he was slightly bigger and selectors saw a lot more of him in the Sydney comp. From a north blue bag

When mick pannowitz coached winton in the 70s, he raised the standard of rugby league in the central west of qld. He led by example, and was a clean, honest and talented player, who will never be forgotten by the people of winton.

In left Maitland in 1973.Missed that grand final! Many yrs later in Syney 2003 I was fortunate enough to meet Johnny Raper and asked him about "Panno",the 1965 test in NZ when re Johns injury Terry got a start. His exact words that day " Terry was one of the best players I ever played against!" that from an immortal. To me and my old mates from Horseshoe Bend a truly legendary man Maitlands

I met Terry Pannowitz when I coached a young side from Blackalls Park at a presentation that invited him too. I had asked John Raper and Peter Dimond but both reject the invite because it was to far to travel. I then invited Terry and halfway through my invite he said where and what time? Most players are judged by what they do on the field I like to judge a player by what he does on and off . To me you are a legend of the game, sir, and was an honor to meet you.
