Elwyn Walters

Tenacious hooker originally from the Tweed Heads area, played in three grand final wins with Souths (1967-68 & 1970) and twice toured with the Kangaroos (1967-68 & 1973). Walters did not play in a Test until the tour of NZ, in 1969, after finally breaking into the NSW side. He went on to play Tests against Great Britain (1970), NZ (1971) and in two World Cup campaigns (1970 and 1972) before making his second Kangaroo Tour, in 1973. Walters, who played in four Tests on tour, based his career on the axiom that the quickest way to the line was straight ahead - he was neither fast nor flashy but was very effective in making the hard yards. He was used as a prop at Souths to accommodate the good form of hooker George Piggins but joined a growing exodus of Souths stars when he moved to Easts in 1974. He made his final Test appearance against Great Britain in the First Test that year before winning back-to-back premierships with Jack Gibson's champion Roosters team. Walters played the final season of his Sydney career with Manly in 1977.
