Bill or " bags " Owens played for north Newcastle or northern suburbs, one of the strongest clubs in the district. They were the pride of the league and bill was as tough as teak. Sadly, neither bill or the club exist now. From a former north 1st grader.

Bill Owens from Western Suburbs & Canterbury didn’t play for NSW. There was another Bill Owen who played for Souths at a similar time & they were often confused by the media.

An immortal of Newcastle Rugby League , a player in an era where representing your club meant more than money. The advent of paid players destroyed and spelt the end of Northern Suburbs Rugby League club "The Bluebags" , the greatest of the Newcastle Rugby League clubs .R.I.P.

Please note that this person is not the Bill Owens that played for Northern Suburbs Newcastle. There was a Bill Owens that did play with the Newcastle Club over a number of years and around the same time as the Wests and Canterbury Bill Owens.
