Biography

Former Canterbury prop played for NSW in 1959 and 1961 after moving to Wests. A fiery competitor, Charlton produced a great front-row forward's display against Queensland in 1961 but was sent off with rival Dud Beattie in the 20-17 loss to the northerners. A member of two losing grand final sides at Wests (1958 & 1961, the last as captain), Charlton saw out the final years of his career with Easts.

The first rugby league game I ever attended was Nevilles, 100th game for Wests at Pratten Park. If memory serves me correctly it was against Canterbury. He led the team out and from that moment I was a dyed in the wool magpie supporter. My father knew Nev and introduced me to him one day at Pratten Park during the cricket season. Alan Davidson was in attendance and Nev told me to go and get his autograph, when I returned Nev looked at my autograph book, reckoned it wasn,t good enough and took it to Davo and had him do another personally signed to me. He was always my favourite footballer, although I was a dejected kid when he went to Easts. In later years I played with his nephews Tony and Phil in a side coached by Warren Ryan at Belmore Boys High. Great times, great fun and many wonderful memories of those great magpie teams of the early 60s
