Biography

Rated by Norths president Harry McKinnon as one of the finest clubmen to play for any Sydney premiership side, hooker Norm Strong held the record for first grade matches with the Bears until it was broken by Greg Florimo in 1997. Norths were infrequent visitors to the semi-finals during Strong's 15-year association with the club but the local junior was a rugged competitor and a highly consistent forward who mastered the subtle skills and ploys of hooking. Strong is also credited with bringing the mouthguard into vogue when he opted to wear the device in the mid-1950s. After retiring at the end of 1960, he made a comeback the following year. He went on to break Newtown captain 'Bumper' Farrell's record 250 grade games before hanging up his boots.
