Biography

By the age of 22 this hard-working back-rower had played in 100 first grade games for the Dragons. After coming off the interchange bench in the club’s 1996 grand final loss to Manly Thompson played in the second row in the merged St George Illawarra’s 20-18 loss to Melbourne in the 1999 grand final. The red-haired forward was ruled out of the 2000 season after damaging knee ligaments but returned in 2001 to assume the club captaincy. Thompson struggled with injuries again in 2002-03 and relinquishing the captaincy to Trent Barrett before recapturing his best form in 2004. A contractual dispute with St George officials saw Thompson join neighbours Cronulla and he was one of the club’s best players in the troubled 2006 season.

Took a pay cut for the club... spent many of his own hours and salary promoting the club (well beyond player commitments)... not just a great player, but a true gentleman in every way. RIP Lance
