Biography

1979 Australian Schoolboy rep from Taree spent several seasons playing in Tamworth before coming to Balmain in 1983. A capable goal-kicker and hard-working forward, Brooks represented Country in 1981 but progressed to NSW's State of Origin team in 1985. He spent the 1987-88 off-season in Hull and played in Balmain's 1988 grand final loss to C’bury. Brooks won a premiership with the Tigers' reserve grade team in 1984 but retired after playing in the club’s reserve grade grand final loss to Norths in 1992. Brooks later served on the NSWRL Judiciary in 1996-97.

Hard working grafter often overshadowed by Steve roach, Paul sironen, pierce and Mcguire. Honest player who would give u 100% all of the time. Many of games at leichardt watching brooksy as a kid.

Mel hit harder than any other forward in a star-studded Tigers pack. Gave his all and it was a pleasure to be a Balmain supporter when you saw him play. Cheers Brooksy

Played against Brooksy in high school football.in Tamworth from 1975-78. One of the most complete backrowers you would ever see. Not surprised to see him play NRL. High work ethic and a devastating ball runner back then.
