Biography

Promising centre with Wests Brisbane and Redcliffe was used as a reserve back in State of Origin in 1982 and 1984-85. Currie played for Leeds in 1984-85 and 1985-86 and came to Canterbury as a mid-season replacement for regular fullback Mick Potter. He broke into Queensland's State of Origin team as winger/centre in 1987 and was chosen in the centres in the Centenary Test the following year. Currie then played the other two Tests against Great Britain on the wing. 1988 provided Currie with a premiership victory when the Bulldogs defeated Balmain, 24-12, but he had already made the decision to return home to play with the Broncos. In 1989 he represented Australia on the tour of NZ but a torn achilles tendon the following year robbed him of the chance to tour with the 1990 Kangaroos. Injuries limited him to just seven games in 1992 and he failed to take part in Brisbane's grand final victory before his career was brought to a close. Currie was later the coach of the London Broncos.

His uncle Allan Currie was a great player for Brisbane Easts Tigers during the 1970s winning 3 premierships along the way. Unfortunately there is no separate thread about Allan...he was very close on many occasions to Queensland selection. He was a mentor to Tony Currie during his career.

Tony Currie came of the bench in 1992 I thought.

I watched Tony Currie play a lot of matches
He had the rare ability to take the right option for any given situation on the field
Plus had all the skills and did not make mistakes
