Biography
Halfback Jerry Brien looked set for a great career when he was plucked from Wests' reserve grade to play for NSW in 1925. He represented NSW again in 1928 and was selected for the Second Test against the visiting England team but injured his shoulder in a subsequent club match and was replaced by Eric Weissel. Brien never again got the opportunity to represent his country. After a season with St George he retired as a player but later coached C’bury in 1939 and became an Australian selector. In 1948 Brien became embroiled in the infamous selection controversy surrounding the dumping of incumbent Australian captain-coach Len Smith from that year's Kangaroo Tour.
