I got to know John when he was refereeing in Leeds and District District was in the early 70's. You always knew you were in for a good game when John was the ref. He would talk you through the game. "Good tackle lad" or "you can cut that out". On one occasion all the matches were called off due to frozen pitches. John promptly organised a giant touch session, probably about 50 a side. One of the best ever RL refs.
