Prior to kick off in the first game between Brisbane and Ipswich, the Brisbane players threatened that they would not play unless they were to receive payment for every Bulimba Cup game they play. The QRL agreed and the match went ahead. On the Wednesday following the game, the QRL paid the players 2 pounds each. The players though demanded 3 pounds each.
The next weekend, Brisbane were to travel to Toowoomba. The QRL demanded that those selected were to sign an agreement whereby they would be paid a pre-determined amount irrespective of the gate takings. 11 of the players refused and a second string side was selected. They travelled to Toowoomba and won. The League eventually agreed to the players demands prior to Brisbane's third match.
