In January 2007, the RFL announced an experimental scoring system in an effort to generate interest in the National League Cup. Teams would earn 3 points for a win during the group stages and 2 for a draw. While losses were still worth 0, a team on the wrong side of the scoreboard could still earn a bonus point if they lost by 12 or less.

The top two teams from each group automatically qualified for the round of 16. Similarly to the previous year, the three remaining sides with the best record also made it through. This was Workington, Leigh, and lastly Hunslet, whose progression ensured that the entirety of Group 3 survived.
