Biography

C’bury showed their astuteness by signing Potter while he was still a schoolboy fullback at St Gregory's Campbelltown. In 1984 he burst from relative obscurity to win the 'Dally M' Player of the Year award after a brilliant season. The 19-year-old ran the ball with the confidence of a veteran and was supremely safe under pressure. Potter won premierships with C’bury in 1984-85 but a broken leg in 1986 halted his career in mid-stream. He battled to regain his best form before signing with St George in 1989. Potter showed his maturity with a young Dragon side in 1991 and was a surprise winner of his second gold 'Dally M' award. He was on the fringe of World Cup selection in 1992 but Brisbane’s easy win over St George in the grand final may have cost him his place. Potter retired as a player after leading St George in the 14-6 loss to Brisbane in the 1993 grand final but returned to play for the Western Reds in their debut season in 1995.
