Biography

Randwick RU centre played in 8 Tests with the Wallabies before following club and Test partner John Brass to the professional code in 1970. Smith signed a four-year contract with Souths but the fair-headed centre had returned from the South African tour requiring a cartilage operation and struggled during the ensuing seasons. A succession of knee injuries forced him into retirement at age 27 in 1973.

I remember Phil doing the most amazing kicks to find 'touch' that I have ever seen. He would 'unexpectedly' kick for the further side of the field, catching the opposition unaware and gain an incredible amount of field position.

Phil Smith was a Clovelly JRLFC junior playing during the late 50s and early 60s before his switch to Randwick. He is in the Clovelly Crocodiles Hall of Fame.

I was at the game that Phil stepped past Chang twice in the one game.
If not for chronic knee injuries he would of been a great. A awesome guy no longer with us past away in his mid 50ies so young R.I.P.

My Dad came home from a Souths v St.George trial game and said Phil stood up Graeme Langlands three times in the game. Such a shame his knees were so fragile.
