Bob McCarthy, Bill Annabel & George Piggins all dropped out of the South team with injuries and were replaced by John Dykes, Peter Reed & Ken Stewart.
Les Boyd was selected at 5/8 for Wests but was not allowed to play as he have to serve out a suspension from reserve grade from 1977 so Don Moseley move from wing to 5/8 Wayne Smith from centre to wing and Ken Bourke the new centre. Peter Young also dropped out through injury and was replaced by Bill Cloughessy.
