Match Notes
South Sydney player Bernie Purcell suffered a fractured hip while scoring his try late in the first half, and was stretchered off. Newtown acquired their ascendancy in the first half in the face of a stiff breeze.
South Sydney captain-coach Jack Rayner was forced to withdraw on game day, having hurt his right shin in a trial against St George the previous weekend.
